Why Doing Less Can Help Your Business Show Up More
If you’re a small business owner in Powell River or anywhere along the Sunshine Coast, you’ve probably felt the pressure to do everything on social media. You’ve seen the endless advice online: post every day, be on five platforms, use trending audio, make carousels, go live, use 20 hashtags (but not 21!).
And somewhere between serving your customers, running your shop, managing your staff, or chasing your kids around, you’re supposed to be a full-time content creator too?
Here’s your permission slip to stop. Let’s fix it, the easy way.
The Problem with Doing Too Much
Most small businesses I work with in Powell River and the Sunshine Coast try to do way too much online. They’re juggling:
Three fonts and seven colours
Posting five times a week with no real plan
Random templates that don’t match
A mix of selfies, sales, stock photos, and memes
And they’re overwhelmed so nothing gets posted consistently anyway
Sound familiar?
This is one of the most common things I fix during my free strategy sessions at Tat’s Social. And it always comes down to this: doing less, but doing it well is way more effective than throwing spaghetti at the Instagram wall and hoping something sticks.
Why Simplifying Works
Simplifying your social media isn’t about being lazy, it’s about being strategic.
Here’s what happens when you cut back:
Your feed becomes more cohesive and easier on the eye
You get time back to actually run your business
You feel more confident posting
People start to recognize your brand and trust you
You build momentum and consistency without burning out
It’s one of the biggest mindset shifts I teach in my Fix Your Instagram guide and strategy calls.
What to Cut Back On
Let’s make this practical. Here are the top things I recommend cutting back on right now if you want to streamline your social media and actually start seeing results:
✅ Cut back on how many fonts and colours you use
Choose 2 fonts and 2–3 brand colours. That’s it.Use those in all your posts, your website, and your stories. Consistency is what makes you look professional (not fancy graphics)
✅ Cut back how often you post (for now)
If you’re just starting out or feeling overwhelmed, focus on getting your feed to a place where it looks full and reflects your brand.Once it does, stick to 1–2 solid posts a week (or 3+ if you’re a product-based business). Stories and engagement should be where you spend more time!
✅ Cut back on trying to be everywhere
You don’t need to be on TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.Choose one platform—ideally where your customers hang out (for most local businesses, that’s still Instagram or Facebook)—and get good at that one before adding anything else.
What to Focus On Instead
When you cut back on the chaos, you can focus on what actually matters:
Building trust : Your posts should make people feel like they know you or your brand. Be helpful. Be human.
Clear visuals : Keep your graphics clean, on-brand, and not overcrowded. Don’t underestimate the power of a well-lit photo of your product or space!
Consistency : Posting twice a week every week is better than posting five times one week and ghosting for three.
Engagement : Reply to DMs. Comment on other local businesses. Share what’s happening in Powell River or your Sunshine Coast neighbourhood.Social media for small businesses isn’t about going viral—it’s about being social and showing up in your community.
Ready to Cut Back?
If this sounds like a breath of fresh air, it is.
Simplifying your social media means less stress, more clarity, and more confidence online. And if you’re a small business in Powell River or the Sunshine Coast, that presence matters. Our local economy needs you to be seen, known, and supported without burning yourself out trying to keep up with big-city marketing tactics.
